Balancing Responsibilities and Personal Growth: a Story From Sarna

October 17, 2024

In the heart of Malaringgi village, a story of dedication and resilience unfolds. Sarna, a 29-year-old woman and the youngest of seven siblings, has faced remarkable challenges since her childhood. Losing her father early on, Sarna was raised by her mother under difficult economic conditions. Despite these hardships, she successfully completed her undergraduate education and secured a job as a staff at a hotel in Kendari City Southeast Sulawesi.

Sarna enjoyed her work immensely, but after two years, she made the difficult decision to resign and return to Malaringgi Village. Her mother had become bedridden, and Sarna felt it was her duty to care for her. Sacrificing her dream of being a financially independent working woman, Sarna returned home with a heavy heart.

When the news of a Solar Power Plant (PLTS) project coming to the village broke, Sarna saw a new opportunity. She became actively involved in the management of the PLTS project, participating in a five-day pre-On The Job Training (OJT) program organized by the project contractor. Balancing her time between caring for her mother and attending the training sessions was challenging, but Sarna managed with determination.

Sarna's involvement didn't stop there. She was entrusted with the responsibility of being the treasurer of BUM Desa “Mataiwoi” in Malaringgi, replacing the previous treasurer. This role added another layer of responsibility to her. Despite the demands, Sarna found this to be a pivotal moment to engage in meaningful activities.

Sarna demonstrated her ability to juggle multiple responsibilities by successfully completing the pre-OJT and OJT, which spanned four intensive days. She worked tirelessly, participating in field practices such as installing support poles and solar panels under the scorching sun. Her motivation stemmed from a desire to seize the opportunity to gain hands-on knowledge about PLTS.

Sarna firmly believes in the importance of learning, regardless of status, age, or gender. Her enthusiasm and commitment during the OJT were evident as she balanced her limited finances to pay for daily incentives for her mother's caregiver during her participation on the training sessions.

By May 2024, Sarna had taken on additional duties, handling and recording electricity tariff payments from customers at the BUM Desa office. Her active participation in these roles has not diminished her dedication to her mother's care. Sarna's journey is a testament of women spirit and commitment to both her family and her community. Her story is an inspiring example of how a dedicated woman like her is able to balance personal responsibilities with the pursuit of knowledge and professional growth.
